Parasite Prevention

Why parasite prevention is important

Parasites are organisms that live on or inside pets and can affect their comfort and overall health. Some parasites can cause irritation or illness, while others may lead to more serious health issues if left untreated. Preventative care is one of the simplest ways to keep your pet comfortable and healthy

Parasites we commonly prevent in South West WA

Based on the local environment, we recommend protecting pets against the following parasites:

  • Fleas - External parasites that live on the skin and commonly cause itching. In some cases, flea infestations can lead to skin infections or anaemia.

  • Mites - (including demodex and sarcoptes) Tiny parasites that live on or burrow into the skin and can cause itching and skin irritation.

  • Ticks - While paralysis ticks are not currently present in WA, preventing tick-borne diseases is still important. These diseases are present north of Geraldton and continue to spread south.

  • Intestinal worms - A group of worms that live in the intestines and may cause vomiting, diarrhoea, weight loss, or poor growth.

  • Heartworm - Spread by mosquitoes, heartworm lives in the heart and can lead to serious heart and breathing problems. Prevention is much safer, simpler, and more affordable than treatment.

How parasite prevention works

There are several effective ways to protect your pet from parasites, and the right option depends on your pet’s lifestyle and your preferences. Preventative treatments may include:

  • Yearly injections

  • Monthly topical treatments (applied to the skin)

  • Monthly chewable tablets

  • Collars

  • Shampoos or sprays

We’re always happy to talk through the options and help you choose a plan that suits both you and your pet.

Travelling with your pet

If you’re planning to travel north or interstate with your pet, parasite prevention requirements may change depending on location. Please give us a call before you travel so we can make sure your pet is appropriately protected.
