Imaging

Why imaging is helpful
Unlike people, pets can’t tell us where they’re sore or what’s changed. Imaging allows us to safely look inside the body to better understand what’s going on and help guide diagnosis and treatment. We offer X-rays and basic ultrasound services in-house, allowing for quicker answers and timely care.
X-rays
X-rays are one of the fastest and most effective ways to examine what’s happening inside your pet’s body without surgery. They help us diagnose problems, plan treatment, and determine whether surgery may be required.
We commonly use X-rays to:
Assess bones and joints for fractures, arthritis, or ligament injury
Check heart size and shape when heart disease is suspected
Examine the lungs for causes of coughing or breathing difficulties
Evaluate abdominal organs for issues such as bladder stones, an enlarged liver, or foreign objects
Count foetuses in pregnant animals
Assist in emergency situations, such as suspected bloat or breathing problems
X-rays are usually performed under sedation or general anaesthetic, as pets need to remain very still and are often positioned in ways that can feel uncomfortable. This also helps keep the process safe for both your pet and our team. X-rays are also routinely used as part of dental procedures.
Ultrasound
Ultrasound is a useful diagnostic tool that allows us to assess the texture and structure of organs, rather than just their size and shape. It’s often used alongside other tests to provide a clearer picture of your pet’s condition and can be especially helpful in emergency situations.
Ultrasound may be used to identify more subtle changes, such as masses on organs or changes within the intestines. Depending on the type of ultrasound being performed and your pet’s comfort, sedation may or may not be required.
